Hi! I'm Susanna L. Harris, and I study how communities of bacteria colonize plants. Specifically, I am interested in understanding why only some soil-derived microbes stay adhered to Arabidopsis thaliana (a model plant) roots, while others will eventually leave the root. I am asking whether we can use communities or chemicals to change which bacteria can be maintained with a growing plant and how this could affect the health of both the plant and the surrounding soil microbiome. We predict that some of these bacterial interactions are mediate through production and sensing of antibiotics.
